Emailing is probably the activity we do the most on our computers. Even if you don't work on a computer during the day, you probably sit down in front of it to check your inbox at the end of the day. If the Mail app that comes with your Mac doesn't provide the features you need, you're in luck. There are dozens of great email apps in the Mac App Store. I've tested many of them and these are my favorites. Each one has a little something special that makes it unique. Mail and Calendar support multiple accounts from multiple services, including Gmail and Google Apps. Gmail and Google Apps support was not available on Windows 8. It is available on the Windows 10 version of Mail and Calendar app. If you've been using Newton Mail, you've that Cloud Magic is shutting the app down in September. If, like me, you were a huge fan and are now looking for something to replace it, these alternatives are my favorite mail apps for Mac. • • • • Polymail. I was a little late to the game with Polymail and only started using it recently on Mac (though I downloaded it on iOS when it first launched). It turns out, I love it on the Mac. It has a fantastic interface with cute little buttons everywhere so you don't have to think about what to do next. It actually looks like it belongs on a mobile device, except that you click the buttons instead of tapping them. There is a fourth section that appears whenever you select an email, which displays all of the past correspondences you've had with that particular contact or group of contacts. It's great for quickly tracking down something you've talked about in the past. You can set up new mail with a pre-made template, send calendar invites, get notifications when someone has read your email, and schedule an email to be sent at a later time. You can also write or respond to emails with rich text formatting. So, if you want to change the font, add bold lettering, bullet point a section, or just slap an emoji in there, it's all available right from the toolbar at the top of your new email. The only thing it's missing is Touch Bar support, which would really make this app shine. Polymail can be used for free, but you'll need to sign up for a subscription if you want all of the awesome features that make Polymail stand out, like read notifications, send later, and messaging templates. You can add these features for as low as $9 per month. If you are a heavy email user and these features entice you, give the free trial a run to see if it's worth your money. If you want your computer email experience to look and feel more like a mobile experience, with big, easy-to-find action buttons, Polymail is the one for you. • Free with a monthly subscription - Spark. Spark has this 'Smart Inbox' feature that separates out what is Personal, Notifications, Newsletters, Pinned, and Seen. That is, any email that is from someone in your contacts or otherwise looks like a personal email will be filtered to the top of the inbox list. Below that, in a separate section, emails that look like alerts from companies you deal with, like your gas company or Amazon, that include some kind of alert or notification. Below that, you'll see a section called 'Newsletters' which is exactly that. Below that are emails you've flagged or tagged as important in some way. Lastly, emails you've seen, but haven't moved to another folder. Spark also allows you to snooze an email and come back to take care of it at a later time. This is invaluable when you regularly get emails that you need to respond to but don't have time for until the end of the day. I use it all of the time. It also has gesture-based actions for getting to inbox zero. You can swipe to the right or left to delete, archive, pin, or, mark an email as unread. And it has Touch Bar support, which I love. Spark is best for people that like to have their inbox organized before they go through and move emails to new folders, address them, or delete them entirely. If that sounds appealing to you, try Spark. • Free - Airmail. Airmail treats your emails like a to-do list. You can triage your inbox by scheduling when you are going to take care of an email. If you can't get to it right now, snooze it for later. If it's an email that requires an action, send it to your to-do folder. If it's something important that you'll want quick access to, mark it as a memo. And, when you've finished dealing with your email, send it to the 'Done' folder to get that sweet satisfaction of having completed something on your task list. If you get more done by treating everything like a to-do list, get Airmail and your inbox will be empty in no time. • $9.99 - Mail Pilot. For Mac owners, a more efficient method (particularly for those interested in running the Windows application and not Windows itself) is to use WineBottler, a free open source tool that converts Windows programs into OS X programs so that they can be run natively. This tutorial is for intermediate users who want to install and use Wine on their. You can install Windows and Mac side by side and switch between them using. Installing Wine on Mac This tutorial is for intermediate users who want to install and use on their computer running macOS. You should already know the basics of how to use the command line. If you don't,. • • • • • • • • • • • What is Wine? No, I'm not talking about the kind you drink, I mean the kind that lets you run Windows apps without the Windows operating system. It's kind of Zen, when you think about it. Oh, and did I mention it's completely free, legal, and open source? Nowadays, Windows and Mac play nicely together. You can install Windows and Mac side by side and switch between them using, but that requires a reboot every time, and you can only use one operating system at a time. You can also use a tool like or to virtualize Windows and run it together with Mac, but virtualization is slow and it takes up a lot of memory. (Your physical computer creates an imaginary 'virtual' computer within itself, and runs Windows on that. That takes a lot of resources!) On top of that, all of these solutions require you to own a legal copy of Windows, which isn't cheap! Wine is different. When any program runs, it requests resources like memory and disk space from the operating system. All that Wine does is make sure that those requests get answered so that the program can run correctly. As far as the program knows, everything is going smoothly because it has everything it needs. It never even realizes that it's not running on Windows! It's simpler than emulating a whole new computer, so it's faster. Since it's just translating requests, you don't need a copy of the actual Windows operating system. Plus, Wine is open source, which means people are continually improving it and adding new features. And you can't beat the price! Will My Program Work With Wine? A lot of people discover Wine because they have one specific Windows program that they need to use, and it's the last thing preventing them from switching to a different operating system. So, the big question is, will it work? The short answer is: probably, but it's worth checking. The Wine project maintains a database called the that has user reviews of how well specific Windows programs work under Wine. Search for your program and find out! (If it's not listed, that doesn't necessarily mean that it won't work — only that you're apparently trying to use a very obscure program!) Requirements To install Wine on your Mac, you will need the following: • macOS 10.10 (Yosemite) or above • Access to an Admin account, with password • An internet connection To, click on the Apple logo on the far left side of the toolbar, select 'About This Mac', and look at your version number under the big 'macOS' or 'OS X'. If it's 10.10 or higher, you're all set. Office 2019 will be Microsoft's latest suite of perpetual apps, where users pay once for Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and more. Inside the Office feature of embedding fonts within documents. Font embedding is when the font details are stored in the document itself so that anyone reading will see the same text as the creator. Normally fonts are installed on the computer and used by whatever programs need them. If the font you want to use isn’t on other computers, you can embed the font to ensure that the document looks the same on any computer that opens it. How to embed a font To embed fonts in a Word or PowerPoint document go to Options| Save and look for ‘Preserve fidelity when sharing this document:”. Check the box ‘Embed fonts in the file’. There is another choice to embed only the parts of the font needed, rather than the entire font. Published on Jan 27, 2011 This is a step-by-step tutorial on how to download fonts, installing them, and using them in your Microsoft Words, Powerpoint, Excel and more. Note: To embed fonts in a Microsoft Office Word document or PowerPoint presentation, see Embedding fonts on the PPTools site. Locate custom fonts on the Web In addition to acquiring and using fonts installed with other applications, you can download fonts from the Internet. For example, if the only letters used in the embedded font are ‘H O M E R’ Word will only store the details of those five exact letters and no more. This reduces the size of the document but means that any changes to the characters using the embedded font won’t show up properly. For example, change HOMER to MARGE on another computer, the A and G won’t show up properly because those letters weren’t included in the embedded font. ‘Do not embed common system fonts’ is another document size saving option. Most Windows and Mac computers share a common set of fonts, either the same or very similar so Office usually doesn’t embed those fonts. Document size can be a concern but not a big deal. Most fonts don’t take up a lot of space and the Office 2007/2010 formats compress the entire document anyway. Once the embed options are on, save the document and then you can send it to other people. If you don’t embed If you don’t embed a font then the document may look quite different on another computer. Microsoft Office will try to match the unavailable font named in the document with another font installed on the computer. Sometimes the match works well but other times it doesn’t. For example here’s a heading using the ’10 minutes’ font. Font incompatibilities are fairly common because each version of Windows and Office usually has new fonts. Calibri font was new in Office 2007 and became the default font. Any Office 2007 opened by someone with Office 2003 or prior would probably have Times New Roman automatically substituted. There are also differences in the fonts available for different versions of Mac and portable devices too. However most of those are handled by Office with reasonably close font substitutions. The majority of font problems come with third-party fonts – either purchased or free downloaded ones. • Click New Message in the Mail toolbar, or choose File > New Message. • Enter a name, email address, or in the 'To' field. The great thing about ffmpegX is that it’s based on a large collection of Unix tools which give it excellent power and flexibility, plus it’s wrapped in a simple drag and drop interface. The variety of formats it supports is quite extensive and the level of customization it offers is almost too much. That is, if there was such a thing. Version 0.0.9y compatible with Mac OS X 10.2 3. Sadly, development on iSquint has been discontinued, at least in its current form. The good news is you can still get your hands on this helpful utility and it continues to work great at converting videos for iTunes. Eventually a new version will be released under a new name (it’s in open source development at the moment), but in the meantime you can enjoy all of its current benefits. Version 1.5.2 compatible with Mac OS X 10.3 6. Even though FLV2iTunes is quite a bit different than the other programs in this list, I still feel like it deserves a place here. Its name suggests it only supports.FLV files, but that is not the case. It can take a number of video formats and convert them into an iTunes-friendly codec. Not only that, it can import your video directly into iTunes itself after it’s done converting. Version 0.9.11 compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 (older version supports 10.4). Ffmpegx is a horribly thought out program meant for only “advanced” users/programmers. My computer is now full of files I cannot delete, drag to my trash, nor remove from my actual home screen. |
